CHMS English Department Hosts AI Vocabulary Workshop

The English Department of Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan held a professional development workshop on 27 February 2026 titled “Building Better Vocabulary Through AI-Assisted Writing.” The session was facilitated by Ms Joanna Kwan Pei Yun, a Secondary English and Drama teacher, Senior Literacy Coach and Education Specialist.

The workshop addressed common challenges in students’ writing, including limited vocabulary range, repetitive word choice and vague language. Drawing on research that highlights vocabulary as a strong predictor of writing proficiency, Ms Kwan emphasised that meaningful vocabulary growth requires repeated exposure and contextual use rather than memorisation alone.

Teachers experienced practical strategies such as the Word Gradient and the Frayer Model to deepen students’ understanding of new words. The session also explored how AI tools like ChatGPT can support vocabulary development as a “thinking partner” and feedback tool, while stressing that AI should support teaching, not replace it.

Findings from a classroom study involving 12 Year 10 IGCSE ESL learners were shared. After introducing ChatGPT-supported writing practice, students showed improvement in lexical diversity and reported increased motivation and confidence. At the same time, teachers discussed concerns such as over-reliance, accuracy and academic honesty, underscoring the need for clear guidelines and structured use.

The workshop concluded with teachers designing lessons that integrate pre-teaching of vocabulary, offline drafting and monitored AI use, reaffirming the department’s commitment to thoughtful and responsible innovation in English language teaching.
